OK - thanks. I apologize for the late follow up question:
How is the best fit plane calculated? Am I correct to assume that it's through a PCA on the local neighborhood?

Orientation of Best Fit Plane for Roughness Calculation
Hello, I apologize for this question, because I know the 'roughness' calculation has been discussed many times. I understand that the roughness value for a point is the orthogonal distance to the best fit plane of the local neighborhood, but here is my question: Is the best fit plane established to ...

Re: Adding Transformation Matrices...???
Well, I just answered my own question (I hate it when I do that... but not really). It turns out you only need to do matrix multiplication of the [fine registration transformation]*[point-pair picking transformation]. If you want an explanation, this website has a good one: https://www.brainvoyager....

Adding Transformation Matrices...???
I'm working through the registration of two point clouds. I follow the traditional method when working in CloudCompare where I do the manual alignment through point-pair selection, which gives me the first transformation matrix. Then, I use the fine registration, which gives me the second transforma...

Re: C2C Distance Interpretations
Thanks Daniel. And yes - I'm splitting the resulting distances into the 3 component scalar fields. I'll give the 2.5D volume tool a try, as well.

C2C Distance Interpretations
Good afternoon, I am currently looking at some C2C distances between two point clouds of a highway bridge. The difference in the point clouds is that the second is loaded with a known weight - and I'm trying to determine the amount that the loaded bridge is deflecting by looking at changes between t...

Thanks for the responses - my reply is long overdue, but I have gone back and figured it out based on your responses. I appreciate the help

X, Y, Z Scalar Fields of C2C Distances
Good afternoon, I apologize for this question, but please keep in mind that I am a "newbie" to CloudCompare. When calculating C2C distances, it gives the option to "split the X, Y, and Z components". When I check that box, and after saving the point cloud and reloading it, I then...

Re: Alignment of Highway Bridge By its Supports
Thanks Daniel,
I have not tried the M3C2 plugin but will give that a shot this week or next and let you know how it turns out. Also, I never considered using more than 4 point pairs for the alignment tool... So, I'll try these steps and see how it goes from there

Alignment of Highway Bridge By its Supports
Hi Daniel (or anyone else reading this post), I'm new to CloudCompare and I'm having a couple of registration issues... I think. I'm trying to measure the deflections on a small highway bridge using point clouds in CloudCompare - one point cloud where the bridge is not carrying a load, and another p...
