HELP - Allignment and Scaling of two point clouds

Post by Wiggatron »

Hi,
Im looking to find coastal erosion change over a decade long period in certain coatal areas and I have multiple point clouds that i need to allign. Ive tried following tutorial videos and advice on here however i just cant seem to get them close enough alligned and scaled correctly for accurate results. Im also having issue with scalar field values as im almost certain my numbers are too high and im not sure why. As you can tell im new to this and have a ton of questions so if anyone can help id very much appreciate it.
Thanks
daniel

Well, maybe that would be easier via email, or at least with some screenshots of the data. If you have some fixed points in all your scans, you should definitely use the 'Align' tool (point-pair based). But if you don't, then you still need some stable portions in all your clouds, and use them to register the scans with the 'ICP' tool.

You can optimize the scale with both tools. But make sure to select the right points/areas to reach a reliable result.

And regarding the values you see, I guess it depends on how well the registration went, and also mind that the distance values are expressed in the same units/scale as the points. So it can be anything (CC does not know what the real units are, it just uses the point coordinates as they are read from the file).
