Alling and merge two point clouds issue

Post by MaironIV »

Hi, i'm trying to merge one point cloud to another (or a mesh) but i have a problem importing the first one.
I registered the point cloud on Recap and i exported the e57 without the scans in order to have a single e57 file. When i import to Cloud Compare i can see all the 339 scans in the left box so, when i import the mesh, i cannot merge them because i have all the scans separate. How do i solve it?

thank you very much

Well, normally you can select all the scans (either manually or by right clicking on the top group containing all the scans and using the 'Select children by type and/or name' option). And then you can merge them with 'Edit > Merge'.

And mind that it's not possible to merge a mesh with a point cloud (you'll have to mesh the cloud first, or sample points on the mesh).

Hi Daniel, thank you for your reply.

I started the process of merging the scans and i'll post the result here as soon as it is complete.

So here is the problem.
I have a point cloud made by a laserscan (very big, 339 scans of a little town) and a mesh model (made by photogrammetry) in Reality Capture. With the laserscan i do not have the roofs of the buildings but with the drone images yes.
It is better to merge two mesh models or two point cloud? The final result should be a mesh textured model and i need also the analysis of the medium error between the two models.

So first, CC cannot generate textures (it can preserve the existing ones if any, but it cannot generate new ones).

But I bet, for your needs, it would still be better to merge 2 meshes...

And CC can generate error maps in terms of distances between the 2 data sets (if that's what you are referring to as 'errors')
